Updates to Science Project from Mrs. Redel

I have had several questions concerning this project.  The purpose of the project is for student to review the concepts they are learning for electricity and magnetism and have fun doing it:)

For the presentation, it should be about 15 minutes long plus another 2-3 minutes to explain the use of the scientific method to answer one of the inquiry questions.  If students are creating a book, about 15 pages along with one or two for the explanation of the scientific method to answer the inquiry question.  This 2-3 minute explanation or 1-2 pages is what they will present in class.

To complete the 15 minute presentation, it should consist of the answer to each of the topic questions  (these answers should be about 4-10 sentences long depending on the question).  For many of the questions, there is no need for examples.  For example, a content 4 score for the question of What common household products are made with simple circuits could be something like this.......

Many of the objects we use daily have simple circuits in them.  Can you guess 5?  Yep, you guessed it, a flashlight, some cell phones, my daughter's talking Elmo, the neck massage I use nightly, and the toy car I have for my daughter that zooms around that she loves.

For the inquiry questions, I am not looking for anything that is outrageously done.   I just want the children to chose one inquiry question and have fun testing it.  Overall, I do not want the students to work for more than 15 minutes nightly on this project.  I want a 5th grade version of what the students understand about the topics: electricity, magnetism, and the relationship between the two.

Finally, for the quality element, I am just looking for style elements that enhance the presentation or book.  No homework will be assigned for science until this project is done.   Please do not make this a chore.  Let the 5th graders come up with a presentation style they want to do and learn while doing it.

Best Regards,

Kalinda Redel, 5th Grade Teacher
